Colombia is famous for its colors. The white beach sand and turquoise waters. The blue, red and orange local architecture. The green and brown jungles, palm trees and mountains. From the cathedrals and museums of Bogota and the Caribbean-flavored town of Cartagena, to ancient Pre-Colombian sites and the Coffee region of Pereira, Colombia is a land filled with mystique. Its unique sights, sounds and scents will stay with you long after you have departed, as you dream of returning time and time again.
Day 1 – Arrival at Bogota
Landing at airport in Bogota, Colombia’s capital, which is 2,600 meters above sea level. Bogota is a cosmopolitan city that blends the old with the new and has a vibrant nightlife scene. Check in at hotel. Stayover in Bogota.
Day 2 – Bogota
A half-day guided tour of the city’s historic center, including the Simon Bolivar statue (“Liberator of Latin America”), national buildings, the cathedral and picturesque alleys. A cable car ride to the Monserrate Monastery (Closed on Sundays – Botero Museum as alternative), and a visit to the Gold Museum, which houses the largest collection of Pre-Colombian gold works in the world (Closed on Mondays – Botero Museum as alternative). Stayover in Bogota.
Day 3 – Bogota – Sacred Lake
A drive north to Guatavita. After a half hour’s walk, we will reach the Pre-Colombian Sacred Lake Observatory, which is the source of the El Dorado legend. Lunch and back to Bogota, while stopping in the town of Zipaquira on the way and paying a visit to the Salt Cathedral, which is located 180 meters below the ground (a former salt mine). Stayover in Bogota.
Day 4 – Bogota – The Coffee Region
A departure flight from Bogota to Pereira, which lies in the heart of Colombia’s coffee region. Check in to a hotel in one of the coffee farms in the area. An afternoon visit to the Genova Coffee Farm, which includes a lesson on the traditional coffee growing and production process that has been practiced for over 120 years. A return to the hotel, after some coffee tasting. Stayover at Coffee Farm.
Day 5 – The Coffee Region – Corcora Valley
A trip to Corcora Valley, a nature reserve where Colombia’s national palm tree grows in abundance and many local birds can also be witnessed. A welcoming cocktail is followed by a walking tour in the rainforest (horseback riding at an additional cost). Lunch and a visit to the colonial city of Salento, which includes shops that showcase diverse handcrafted art. Return to hotel. Stayover at Coffee Farm.
Day 6 – Pereira – Santa Marta
A morning flight to Santa Marta (via Bogota), which lies on the northern Caribbean coast. A tour of the city, which is famous for its historical center, and Taganga Bay. Return to hotel at end of tour. Stayover in Park Tayrona area.
Day 7 – Tayrona National Park
A full day to roam independently through one of South America’s most beautiful parks, which is situated between the jungle and the Caribbean coast, between palm trees, white sand and turquoise water (drive to park via shuttles from hotel). Stayover in Park Tayrona area.
Day 8 – Cartagena
A morning drive to Cartagena (4 hour drive) – a beautiful city on the Caribbean coast. A walk in the city, along the bay, up to “Popa”, which offers a breathtaking view of the city’s historic center. A walk through Castillo San Felipe De Barajas and the city’s old quarters. Stayover in Cartagena.
Day 9 – Cartagena – Rosario Islands
A cruise to Rosario Islands Reef Park (Parque Corales del Rosario). A visit to Encanto, a private island surrounded by turquoise waters and tranquility. Lunch is included. An afternoon boat ride back to Cartagena (last boat leaves at 4 PM). Stayover in Cartagena.
Day 10 – Departure
Transfer to airport, based on the hour of the flight to the next destination.
