From North to South – A trip for the independent traveler
Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia’s most interesting countries – offering travelers immense gratification. It is a land filled with natural wonders – rivers, mountains, rice fields, bays and islands. It is country with a rich history, from the imperial era to the 20th century. But above all, it is a country with warm and welcoming people, who extend their hands to visitors, taking them on a journey to cities, villages and regions like no other.
Day 1 – Arrival in Hanoi
Arrival in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, a beautiful city filled with romantic building from the city’s French period. A warm welcome by our representative at Noi Bai Airport. Transfer to hotel. Stayover in Hanoi
Day 2 – Hanoi – Night Train
A tour of the city, including a visit to the house and mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh (if possible), the One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature and the Hanoi Hilton (a jailhouse from the French rule period). A rickshaw ride around the lake and the city’s old quarters. A water puppet show, which is a traditional show practiced in rural Vietnam. Transfer to the train station for the trip to Lao Cai. Sleep within the train’s private cabins.
Day 3 – Sapa – Local Tribe Market
A visit to one of the villages and colorful market. Approx. 70 mountain tribes and peoples reside in the mountains north of the Red River, close to the China and Laos borders, who still practice their traditional lifestyle. Each people has their unique colorful clothing, and they dress up during the days of the market (the big market operates on Sundays). After the visit, we will continue the tour by walking through the villages. Stayover in Sapa.
Day 4 – Sapa – Hanoi
The landscape in which Vietnam’s mountain tribes live is dramatic and unique: narrow valleys, agricultural terraces on steep slopes, clear rivers and forests filled with bamboo and pine trees. A visit to the villages in the area, where we will catch a glimpse of local tribe life. An afternoon drive back to Hanoi via the main road (approx. 5 hour drive). Arrival in Hanoi in the evening. Stayover in Hanoi.
Day 5 – Halong
A trip to Halong. A boat ride in the famous Halong Bay, where green rocks protrude from the waters of the sea. The view of the Karstic Islands in unforgettable. A visit to the stalactite cave. Boat ride includes lunch. Dinner and stayover in the “Junk Boat” – deluxe conditions and private cabins.
Day 6 – Halong-Hue
Breakfast on the boat and a return to Halong Bay (arrival in late morning). Transfer to airport in Hanoi for flight to Hue (afternoon). Transfer to hotel. Stayover in Hue.
Day 7 – Hue – Hoi An
Hue was Vietnam’s imperial capital city. The city lies on the banks of the Perfume River and is an important cultural, religious and educational center. A tour of the city includes kings’ tombs, the forbidden city and the local market, not to mention a boat ride on the Perfume River and a visit to the Thien Mu Pagoda. The afternoon will include a trip to Hoi An via the “Pass of the Clouds”. Stayover in Hoi An.
Day 8 – Hoi An
A tour of Hoi An, an ancient port city that seems “frozen” in time. A walk through the old city – the Japanese Covered Bridge, the Old House of Tan Ky and the nearby artist villages. The afternoon is free for resting on the beach. Bicycle rental available. Stayover in Hoi An.
Day 9 – Ho Chi Minh City
A morning ride to Danang airport and a flight to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Arrival and a tour of the city, including the War Remnants Museum, Saigon Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Independence Castle (from the outside), and Chinatown (the Pagoda and the Market – in accordance with flight schedule). Stayover in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 10 – Ho Chi Minh City – Cu Chi Tunnels
A trip to Cu Chi, where the Northern Vietnamese forces fought the South Vietnamese and their American Allies. A visit to the Viet Kong underground tunnels, and then to Tay Ninh Temple, where we will be acquainted with the Cao Dai religion that blends Eastern philosophical traditions and religions. An afternoon drive back to Ho Chi Minh City. Stayover in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 11 – Ho Chi Minh City – Mekong Delta
A ride south through villages and watery rice fields, to the Mekong Delta. A boat ride along the delta, to meet with farmers, fishermen and village folk. A ride to Cantho at day’s end. Stayover in Cantho.
Day 12 – Cantho – Ho Chi Minh City
A morning motorboat ride to the Kay Rang Floating Market, where we can see boats laden with fruit, fish, rice, etc. A visit to the fruit orchards, where we can sample tropical fruit and meet local farmers. An afternoon return to Ho Chi Minh City. Stayover in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 13 – Departure from Ho Chi Minh City
Transfer to the airport, to the next destination.
